When You Are on Vacation it’s Important to Know How to Take Care of Your Hearing Aids

You make a financial investment when you purchase hearing aids, so take measures to keep them safe as you hit the road. It would be great if all vacations were worry-free, but sadly, that’s often not the way it goes. If you would like one less worry, make a plan to take care of your hearing aid while on your trip. When taking a trip, are there any specific steps to put in place for the safety of your hearing aids?

Start With the Essentials

Be certain to bring along a full cleaning kit to begin. Keep cleaning your hearing aids the same as you would when you are at home. A brush or pick is included with most brand name cleaning kits. You will also want to bring a soft dry cloth to wipe the surface down and a case to put them in when you are not wearing them.

Extra batteries will probably be a good idea also. You will most likely use your hearing aid more than usual so backups are a smart idea. If your hearing aids have rechargeable batteries, bring along an additional charger, too. Occasionally items get lost so carry your extra charger in a separate bag.

Also, plan to bring along these other things:

  • Tubing
  • Soft domes
  • Sport clip

Creating a checklist is important so that you can be certain that you don’t forget anything you may really need. Put your hearing aid supplies in an easy to get to spot to be sure that you can get to them when you need them. If you are flying, for instance, keep this stuff in your carry on luggage or bag.

Make Sure You Get Them Cleaned And Checked

One week before leaving take your hearing aids in for service. You will want them working their best when you are traveling. Ask the retailer about any warranties you have on your hearing aids and bring any paperwork with you in case something goes wrong. Don’t accidentally void your warranty by skipping something. Take some time to learn how to file a claim.

It won’t hurt to ask if there is a retailer around where you will be staying, too. Or look up hearing aid repair or retailers on your own. If you require a new battery or some repairs, it will be possible to bring it right in.

Some Considerations When You Are Using Hearing Aids at The Airport

With all of the changing security requirements, going to the airport is often challenging. When you are walking through the security checkpoint, keep your hearing aids in your ear. Inform security that you are wearing them as you approach so that they know ahead of time. If you listen to the officer’s direction you most likely won’t need to remove them to go through the metal detector.

It’s also not a problem if you wear your hearing aids on board the plane. You will not need to turn them off before take off like you do a mobile device, either. When on the plane, your hearing aid may not work as well. Use visual clues to make people aware that you might not hear as well. For instance, you can cup your ear to indicate that you can’t understand.

A Drying Kit or Dehumidifier is a Good Idea

Swimming and humidity go hand in hand with vacationing. Even if you don’t plan on going swimming in a pool or going in the ocean, it is a good idea to bring a way to dry out your hearing aids at night to protect against water damage. A dryer is a preventative measure worth having year round, but it’s especially important when you travel.

Make Sure You Know How Your Hearing Aids Function

Different features work better in different settings. In a crowded restaurant for instance, or at an amusement park, you will need to filter out background noise. Some have outdoor settings that can make the beach more enjoyable. You won’t know what feature to use if you are not familiar with how your hearing aid works.

Bring a Remote Microphone

A remote microphone will be convenient in loud environments, when driving in the car, or if you are on a plane. When you are talking with somebody, clip the microphone to them and you will be able to hear them better.

Call Ahead to The Resort or Hotel

Commonly, popular vacation destinations accommodate for the hearing impaired. Since you won’t be wearing your hearing aids during the night you will want to take advantage of that. Ask them about rooms with smoke alarms that flash the lights or shake the bed. Closed caption televisions and special phones can be requested.
